The 'head' side of each coin has the portrait of the monarch who was on the throne in the year the coin was minted.
Head Portrait of King George VI - 1937 to 1952
Head Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II - 1953 to 2022
Fast Fact: Normally when a monarch succeeds another, the heads of the coin portraits change direction. However, in 1937, George VI succeeded to the throne after the death of his father and the abdication of his elder brother David, who was to be called Edward VIII. In deference to this fact, his portrait assumed the same position as his father as if there had been a monarch in between. A nice touch and unique in British coinage.
